The IP55 and IP57 certification of Xperia Z saw it to a great success. Sony is hoping to follow suit with the new Xperia ZR. The Xperia ZR will the the international version of Xperia A which will launch soon in Sony’s home base Japan. With many smartphones in the market, Sony is betting all in the IP58 certification of the Xperia ZR to be a success. Lets see what the phone has to offer.

Display

The smartphone will have a 4.6 inch display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. This sums up to a 326ppi ¬†or a “retina” display. A smaller screen paired with low ppi will surely give a better battery life as compared to Xperia Z.

Performance

The Qualcomm S4 pro chipset running at 1.5GHz found in Xperia Z/ZL will power the device. The chipset has proven itself time and again that it’s a monster. The Adreno 320 will handle the graphics and the RAM is 2Gb. Coupled with lower density screen, the device is expected to outperform Sony’s both flagships. This will sting a bit for the owners of Xperia Z/ZL.

Storage

The ZR will come with a 8gb internal storage capacity. This is lower than the flagships which offer 16gb storage. So, users who tend to install a lot of heavy apps must use caution. Thankfully, there’s a microsd expansion slot.

Form

The Xperia ZR will be 10.4mm thick, which is thicker than the 7.9mm of Xperia Z. But due to the smaller form factor and plastic back, its lighter by 4g. Also, unlike the ZL’s textured plastic back, the ZR has a smooth back. So, the phone will slip a lot.

Camera

The smartphone will feature the same 13mp shooter found in the Z/ZL. It will also be capable of HDR video recording. This feature debuted in the Xperia Z. Since same optical sensor is used, the drawbacks found in Xperia Z/ZL are expected to be found here.

IP58 Certification

The major selling point of the Xperia ZR will be its IP58 certification. The Xperia Z had a IP57 certification which allowed it to stay under water up to 1m for 30mins. But IP58 in the ZR will allow it to stay under water up to 1.5m for 30mins. This feature is sure to attract a lot of buyers!!

Conclusion

With all the above features and price set at Rs. 29,990, the phone is a sure shot hit. The phone is as powerful as the Xperia Z/ZL with better waterproofing features than Xperia Z. The reduced resolution and less on board storage is what keeps the phone in the mid range bracket. So, the Sony Xperia ZR is recommended to people who are looking for a powerful handset and a budget of under 30K should strongly consider this device. The IP certification is a pretty huge plus point too. In this price bracket, the other smartphones in the market are the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the LG Optimus G.
